Crabgrass control and your lawn

Dealing with crabgrass on your lawn is reasonably simple

crab grass

Crabgrass is an annual grass that grows well in lawns with poor drainage or lawns that are poorly watered, as well as unfertilized and think lawns – in other words, they survive in conditions that are less than optimal for the lawn you want.

As annuals, they produce seeds and then die off in the fall. That gives you an advantage if you can prevent the next season’s seeds from germinating. A pre-emergant herbicide, applied in the spring will prevent new crabgrass from taking hold as it interferes with an enzyme needed for germination. A fertilizer like corn gluten is perfect for this purpose.

When crabgrass dies off it can leave a large gap in your lawn, so you should dress and overseed to ensure you give the grass you desire the best chance to outcompete other weeds from taking over the bare ground.

Like most problems with your lawn, proper care to deal with crabgrass is a relatively simple technique, you just need to pay attention and deal with it in a timely manner.
